Music Lab 4: Getting Started

Return to CIS 300.

Objective

Compose a piece of music specifically for your group's game.

Your Music and this Class

By this point in the semester your group has, theoretically, decided on a specific game to create. Being the ardent musician you are, you are probably already thinking about what music you will be writing to accompany this game. At this point, your team's project should have its setting, genre, and style well enough defined that you can get an idea of what type of music you'll need. However, if some of these concepts are still vague or partially undecided, the music you write may actually help to point the game in a certain direction, which is, of course, whatever direction you decide to steer it.

Analysis

What exactly is your game about? In a text file, describe your game as best you can in terms of genre, mood, and setting. Then, list at least 5 instruments that you think would help depict such a game. Think back to how certain instrumentations can convey certain emotions, and try to determine what you wouldd want/expect to hear while playing your game.

Composition

Write a piece of music for your game using at least the five instruments you listed (if you honestly can’t find one or two of them as samples, that’s OK). Your music should be written to reflect one of three general game segments:

  1. Title Screen / Main Theme
  2. Tutorial / First Level
  3. Boss / Final Level

Back in your text file, note which one of these you have chosen, and then explain why you think your music would fit well into that role. The only other requirements for this song are that it must be over 1:30 long, and it must utilize Reason properly. When you are done, please name your piece.

Submission

Create a zip file containing the following files:

You should submit this zip file as "lab4music.zip" to CMS.

This project will be mainly graded on:

For the last consideration, pretend this piece will be in your game, playing for all to hear at the game showcase. In theory, it will.
