Lab 4W: Your Game
CIS300: Introduction to Computer Game Design – Fall 2006
Goal: To get a head start on
thinking about how to approach the narrative of your game.
What
to do:
1.
Start
simple. Layout the basic story arc of your game. What happens? Who is
involved?
2.
Get
more in depth. Give a character sketch (a paragraph demonstrating [note that I
did not say describing] the character) of a few of the characters.
3.
Get
more complex. Give a brief interaction sketch or two.
4.
Take
a step back and forget all that; We’re going abstract. What is this game about?
a.
What
should the player feel?
b.
If
the player should be feeling different things at different times, justify how
and why. If not, you should justify that as well.
c.
What
is the essential meaning of the game?
d.
How
can you weave the core feelings into the actions of the player?
e.
How
can you weave the meaning into every moment of your game. Into every action.
5.
Revisit
the first steps. What changes now need to be made?
6.
What
are your thoughts on the direction the narrative of your game must take?
