CIS 300: Introduction to Computer Game Design
First Prototype

You can't play a game until you design it. But you can't really design it until you've played it. In this class, we're adopting an iterative development model, so throughout the semester you'll be designing, implementing, and testing and sequence of increasingly refined versions of your game.

This assignment is to create the first such version of your game. As this is the very beginning, you aren't expected to have a sophisticated demo. Your prototype should be something that is:

  • Playable by a person (or persons)

  • Demonstrates a core mechanic of your game

  • Gives a feel for what the gameplay experience will be

Note that this prototype does not have to be implemented as a computer program. You can make a board game version of it if you like, or even a pen-and-paper style role-playing version. As long as it is playable in some fashion, demonstrates a mechanic of your game, and reflects the intended gameplay, then any form of prototype is acceptable.

You will demonstrate your prototype in class on October 6. Submit a short readme describing the prototype to CMS.

Due Wednesday, October 6 at 10:00am.
