CIS 300: Introduction to Computer Game Design
Game Mechanic Analysis

Great games often have a defining play mechanic. Viewtiful Joe's "FX" control, Prince of Persia's time manipulation, Super Mario Sunshine's waterpack, Black & White's creature training; these mechanics are the center of each game's creative vision, and drive all design decisions.

Other times, a game mechanic is more subtle, but still deeply influences design and balance. Halo's two-weapon limit, Super Monkey Ball's playfield tilting, Wind Waker's wind control, Mega Man's ability acquisition, Final Fantasy X's in-battle party switching; these are not core mechanics, but definitely shape the crafting of those games.

This assignment is to pick a game and one of its important mechanics (core or secondary), and analyze that mechanic. Be sure to address the following:

  • What was the goal of using that mechanic in the game?

  • What were the consequences of that mechanic (intended or otherwise)?

  • What aspects of the game design were influenced by the inclusion of that mechanic?

  • In what ways might you alter the implementation of that mechanic to improve gameplay?

  • What are the general requirements for a game to employ that mechanic successfully?

This paper should be a minimum of 4 pages, but can be as long as you like. If you need help thinking of a game and mechanic to analyze, or aren't sure if the mechanic you have in mind is appropriate for the assignment, email me and we can discuss it.
